Do You Need a Gym for Proper Exercise?
Exercise can essentially occur anywhere – even sitting at your desk in the office. Believe it or not, most people are more aft to exercise more often if they don’t have to go through the trouble of traveling to and from a gym. Some people are self conscious about working out in front of other people. Therefore, you may not need a gym for proper exercise. However, there is a difference between doing exercises correctly and doing them incorrectly – which gives you very little benefit in most cases. This is an instance where a gym can come in handy.
You can purchase home gym equipment. You can do exercises that don’t require any equipment at all as well. However, if you are not using the equipment correctly, or you are not doing the exercises correctly, again, you may not be getting the full benefit of the exercise, and at worst, you could hurt yourself.
So, even if working out in a gym isn’t something that appeals to you, you should take advantage of at least one or two sessions with a personal trainer, which can be hired through your local gym, to learn how to do exercises properly, to learn how to use equipment properly, and even to find out which exercises will benefit you the most. A personal trainer isn’t as expensive as you might think they are, especially if you only need their services for a limited amount of time.
You can also ask the personal trainer if they will allow you to video tape your sessions, so that you can refer to them later on. Most personal trainers will be fine with this, as long as you sign a release, which is usually required anyway. Also, most personal trainers will be happy to work with you on a limited, temporary basis, as long as you are upfront about this from the beginning. Simply explain to them that you really can’t afford long term services.
Remember that the type of exercise that is available in a gym is very different from exercises that don’t require gyms. For example, sports are exercise. Swimming is exercise. Walking is exercise. None of those things require a gym. However, if toning and strengthening is what you desire, you may fare better with a gym, because specific types of gym equipment is usually required to achieve this. Again, you could create your own home gym, but this type of equipment takes up a great deal of space, and it can be very expensive.
Only you can decide whether you will benefit from a gym or not for your exercise routine or program. Consider the advantages and the disadvantages of both options carefully, as well as what your goals are in terms of exercise, and the exercise that you need.
