Is It Carpal Tunnel or Arthritis?
Some people really aren’t sure exactly what carpal tunnel syndrome is, but most people do know what arthritis is. Most people, however, are not sure whether the problem is carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis when they start experiencing hand or wrist pain.
The first thing to understand is that arthritis affects the joints of the bones – not the bones. Carpal tunnel syndrome affects the carpal tunnel in the hand and wrist. This tunnel includes bones and joints, making it hard for some to determine whether the pain that they feel is arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Typically, with arthritis, you will experience pain and swelling at the site of the actual joint – not in the rest of the bone. Sometimes, pain is so intense that it is hard to distinguish where the pain actually is, however.
It is important to note that the parts that create the tunnel of the carpal tunnel is actually located across the wrist, and goes around to both the front and back of the wrist. Therefore, pain felt up in the joints of the fingers would not be associated with carpal tunnel syndrome – or so many people believe. Unfortunately, this isn’t true. The fingers are affected, but it is only certain fingers that can be affected by carpal tunnel syndrome.
It is also important to note that arthritis pain and carpal tunnel syndrome pain are actually quite different. Arthritis pain can be throbbing. Some people describe it as a cold pain – much like an ice cream headache, while others will describe it as a hot pain. One thing about arthritis pain is that it is a constant. It isn’t considered shooting pain or sharp pain.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, on the other hand – so to speak – is very different. Many people don’t necessarily describe it as painful. Instead, they may feel like their hand is going numb. This may be followed by a dull ache and in some instances turn into actual pain. It usually starts with a tingling feeling. The median nerve that is affected by carpal tunnel syndrome only gives feeling in the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger. Therefore, you would only feel any numbness or pain in the thumb, the index finger, the middle finger, and in the hand leading up to those fingers with carpal tunnel syndrome.
