How to Deal with Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can be permanent or temporary, but in either instance, it does affect your way of life – especially total hearing loss. Fortunately, there have been numerous breakthroughs in medical science, and a great deal of hearing loss can actually be restored. There are also many small devices that are unobtrusive, but that will allow you to hear just as well as the next person.
As we age, we typically have a harder time hearing. This typically starts happening around the age of sixty-five, and the hearing loss can get worse as we continue to age. Of course, age isn’t the only reason that we lose our hearing. Being subjected to loud noise all of the time, without ear protection, can cause hearing loss. This includes music blaring from the stereo, which is why younger people are now experiencing hearing loss at an earlier age. People who are experiencing hearing loss may actually become quieter, and start ‘mumbling.’ They may have trouble hearing other people, and constantly ask for things to be repeated. They will often turn the television up very loud, and may start withdrawing from conversation or social situations.
If you are having trouble hearing, make it a point to get out in the world, and adjust yourself for better hearing. Sit closer than usual. Look at people who will be talking to you. Do away with as much background noise as possible. Don’t be embarrassed to ask others to speak slowly or louder. Make the adjustments that you need to make.
Talk to your doctor about alternative hearing or listening devices. There are numerous devices that you can use, such as hearing aids, television aids, telephone aids, and other amplifying systems that can be used on your person, or around your home or office. Take advantage of what science and technology has provided for those who have hearing loss.
If you’ve had hearing loss that is substantial, and you are relatively long, ask your doctor about hearing implants that might work for you. If you are older, don’t be concerned about wearing hearing aids. Hearing aids today are very small and comfortable, and they are so small that other people rarely even notice that you are wearing a hearing aid. Hearing aids can even be tucked inside your ear canal, completely out of view.
