What You Need to Know About Ear Infections
Many people view ear infections as a minor illness that is simply treated with antibiotics. Some people don’t even take ear infections this seriously and don’t get treated at all. What you may not know is that an ear infection can kill you, if the infection finds its way into your blood stream.
The symptoms of an ear infection include pain in the ears, fever, draining fluid from the ears, headaches, dizziness, and feeling like the ear is blocked. You may even experience a temporary hearing loss. Children who cannot yet talk may cry more than is normal, tug on their ears often, and not appear to hear very well, or have trouble sleeping.

Once an ear infection has been diagnosed, and antibiotics have been started, you or your child should start to feel better within a couple of days. If this isn’t the case, or you or your child feel worse, you will need to return to your doctor. An ear infection can cause the eardrum to rupture, and this may actually make your ear feel better. Most doctors will tell you that this is not an emergency but that treatment will be needed within a couple of days of the rupture. While this may not seem like an emergency to the doctor, it is your hearing at risk – not the doctors. See your doctor as soon as possible for treatment.
Most ear infections are the result of a viral infection. While antibiotics are given to treat the ear infection, the viral infection is also being treated. Often, you may have the signs and symptoms of an ear infection for a day or two, and it will go away without treatment. The problem is that the viral infection has not gone away, and the ear infection will return time and again until the viral infection is treated and cleared up.
Complications associated with ear infections include short term hearing loss, long term hearing loss, and ruptured ear drums. More serious complications include mastoiditis, which is a sinus infection often caused by untreated ear infections. Ear infections can spread to other parts of the head if they are not treated, and of course, the infection could enter the blood stream, which could be fatal.
If you have pain in your ear, visit your doctor. Don’t just assume it is a harmless ear ache, because it may lead to something more serious. Again, while doctors may not consider an ear infection to be very important, it is your hearing, and your health that is at risk.
