Exercise Myth Busters
When you start an exercise program, you will most likely have very definitive reasons for doing so. Perhaps your doctor has recommended exercise to help you overcome a health problem. Maybe you want to lose weight. It could be that you simply want to be healthier. Despite your reasons for wanting to exercise, there are some exercise myths that you need to be aware of – so that you aren’t exercising for the wrong reason, expecting results that you will not see.
Many people will select yoga or Pilates as their exercise of choice because they think that it doesn’t hurt, and that it is easy. The truth is that yoga is actually quite difficult and it does hurt, to an extent. People mistakenly think ‘gentle’ and ‘easy’ because the movements and positions that are achieved through yoga are very slow.

If you are exercising for the purpose of losing weight, you need to understand two things. There are two sides to a diet – exercise and eating right. One without the other generally does not work. The second thing that you need to be aware of is that exercise can actually make you hungrier, because of the energy that you are burning off.
Women often avoid strength training because they think that this type of exercise will give them bulky muscles – like those found on bodybuilders. This isn’t the case. Strength training is vitally important for everyone – even non-bodybuilders. Bulky muscles appear when you do a great deal of exercise and strength training while focusing on one or more groups of specific muscles in a concentrated effort to obtain the look that you want to achieve.
Finally, many people will avoid what are termed ‘mind-body’ exercises, such as Tai Chi because they feel that it has no real benefits to obtaining the physical body that they desire. The fact is that this type of mind-body exercise is quite beneficial, in that it improves balance, coordination, flexibility, and strength. It has also been proven to reduce body pain and to help manage and eliminate stress.
There are many other exercise myths that may or may not affect the exercise that you choose, or the amount of exercise that you do. Never take rumor at face value. When you hear something about exercise that doesn’t come from a professional, you need to find out the truth of the information before buying into it. Otherwise, you could cause yourself serious harm, or at the least, not be getting the benefits that you need from exercise.
