Exercise Tips for the Sedentary Person

If you’ve been living a sedentary life, and you decide to jump into an exercise program, you could easily injure yourself, or experience a myriad of other problems. Of course, this depends on the level at which you have been sedentary, and the length of time that you have been sedentary as well.

Sedentary does not necessarily mean that you are a lazy couch potato, and it is important that you realize this. Sedentary people are often very hard workers – it is just that their lifestyle is such that they are often sitting, and not using muscles that less sedentary people use on a regular basis. When this happens, those muscles essentially go to waste. They lose mass and strength, and can easily become injured – even through exercise.

Before you start an exercise program, you should consult your doctor to find out what your actual condition is, and what exercises would be best for you. This is essential, and is the first step to ensure that you don’t hurt yourself with exercise. Your doctor will most likely suggest that you start gently using the muscles that haven’t been exercised in some time, so that you slowly start increasing their strength and mass.

In other words, you probably cannot go from being totally sedentary to jumping on the treadmill and walking a mile safely. You could probably do it, but you will feel the effects of it greatly – and depending on your health, you could have a heart attack during the attempt, depending on how fast you are trying to walk or run. This really doesn’t do you any good, because even if you just make your body hurt, without the heart attack, it will be several days, and possibly more than a week, before you are able to try again. This does not help you.

Instead, walk up and down your driveway a couple of times each day, without skipping a day. Do this for several days, and then walk a little further – or walk the same distance a little faster. Slowly increase the length of time and the speed, allowing your body to gently become accustomed to the changes. Depending on how sedentary you’ve been, and the true condition of your muscles, you may experience just a little soreness, but it should not be so great that you cannot continue the exercise the next day.

While this is not a fast process, it is the safest way to go from sedentary to active. It takes time and patience, and it is vital that you listen to what your body is telling you along the way if you want to avoid serious injury or health problems. Make sure that you also keep a record of your progress, and discuss this with your doctor.
